Nishaanchi Movie Review: An incomplete journey into the world of Anurag Kashyap

Nishaanchi Movie Review: Anurag Kashyap, known for cult films like Gangs of Wasseypur, returns to theaters with his new film, Nishanchi. Expectations were high, but does the film live up to them?

Nishaanchi Movie Review: Story and Theme

Nishaanchi” loosely translates to “precise marksman.” The film centers on violence, revenge, and the complexities of family relationships. It shows how a single step into the quagmire of violence can drag a man and his family toward destruction.

A key aspect of the film is generational violence—where a father’s actions impact his son, and the cycle of violence continues from generation to generation. However, several elements similar to Gangs of Wasseypur are also visible here, raising questions about its originality.

Storytelling Style

The film begins with a bank robbery scene, shot in Kashyap’s familiar style. The story then moves into the past, introduces new characters, and then connects to the present. However, the nearly three-hour runtime makes the film feel cumbersome. Many scenes are unnecessarily stretched, slowing the pace.

Acting and Technical Aspects

The film’s biggest highlight is Aishwarya Thackeray’s powerful performance. She portrays the role of two twin brothers with such ease that the audience forgets that the same actor is playing both roles. This is the film’s greatest technical and acting achievement.

Monica Panwar also grounded the film with her emotional performance. The sets and locations feel real and authentic, a hallmark of Kashyap’s films.

Music and Performance

The song selection seems somewhat unusual and quirky. Like Gangs of Wasseypur, an attempt has been made to use unconventional music, but this time its impact is limited.

Weaknesses

Excessive length and slow pace Obvious similarities to Gangs of Wasseypur weaken the film’s relevance The dark comedy doesn’t have a strong impact

Verdict

‘Nishanchi’ isn’t a bad film, but it fails to emerge from the shadow of Anurag Kashyap’s masterpiece, Gangs of Wasseypur. Some superb performances and technical achievements are its strengths, but the length, music, and lack of novelty in the story are its weaknesses.

If you’re a fan of Kashyap’s films, you can give it a watch. However, viewers expecting the depth and impact of Gangs of Wasseypur may be disappointed.
