Kaantara Chapter One Review: A confluence of faith, heritage and cinematic grandeur

Kaantara Chapter One Review: Director and actor Rishab Shetty returns to audiences after his critically acclaimed film Kaantara (2022). While the climax of the first film remained a topic of discussion in the history of Indian cinema for a long time, audiences were now eagerly awaiting its next chapter. Kaantara Chapter One was released with high expectations and a budget of ₹125 crore.

Story and Background

The film begins with the context of Kaantara in 2022, where a young boy hears the story of his father’s disappearance. From there, the film takes us back in time.

The narrative revolves around the forest, gods, and a power struggle. The rift between the king and the tribal community, and the new traditions that emerge from that conflict, form the backbone of the film. This time, the focus is on Berme, played by Rishab Shetty. Berme’s inquisitive nature and pursuit of new things lead to conflict with the king and his successor (Gulshan Devaiah). This is where a series of events begins, gradually taking on an epic character.

Acting and Direction

Rishabh Shetty’s performance is the film’s greatest strength. His rustic, muscular physique and profound performance connect the audience directly to the heart of the story. In many scenes, his performances deeply touch the audience.

Rukmini Vasanth and Gulshan Devaiah also appear fully invested in their roles. Gulshan’s portrayal of the alcoholic heir is particularly realistic and impactful.

Music and Technical Aspects

The film’s background score and music are a masterpiece in themselves. The music not only adds depth to the scenes but also, at times, instills a wave of faith and energy in the audience.

The production quality is exceptional. The forest setting, battle scenes, and the king’s fort sets appear grand and realistic. It’s clear that the full budget is fully utilized on screen.

Weaknesses

The film’s official title, Kaantara: A Legend Chapter One, is a bit confusing. Viewers perceive it as a sequel, but the title suggests a prequel.

Some parts feel like a repetition of scenes and templates from the first film.

The level of a couple of CGI scenes doesn’t match the reality of the rest of the film.

Verdict

Despite its nearly three-hour duration, Kaantara Chapter One never bores viewers. The film’s emotional depth, technical excellence, and powerful performances keep viewers captivated until the end.

If you saw and enjoyed Kaantara (2022), this film is definitely worth experiencing in theaters.
